The place

A bamboo house standing on fourteen-foot stilts in the fern forest near Volcano, with a spiral staircase winding up to a lanai that wraps the entire structure — 360 degrees of tree canopy from one deck. Bamboo construction makes sense up here: it's light, it handles the constant humidity, and it looks right among the hapu'u ferns. The surprise is that this one doesn't make you rough it. There's WiFi, a smart TV with Netflix, and a comfortable interior, so it suits people who want to sleep in the jungle without going full off-grid — or who need to answer email between volcano hikes. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a short drive, and Volcano village has a general store, a winery and a couple of good restaurants. Same altitude advice as everywhere in Volcano: about 3,700 feet up, cool misty nights, bring layers. Two guests, one bedroom, and the lanai is the whole show.
